Phillies Named as Fit for International Star in Free Agency

The Philadelphia Phillies could be among the teams to pursue an international star.

The Philadelphia Phillies are in their window to contend for a World Series, led by Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. However, the Phillies' core is aging, and they could use some reinforcements in their lineup.

In Jim Bowden of The Athletic's free-agent predictions, he named Philadelphia as a fit for international star Teruaki Sato. Sato is one of the top free agents this offseason after having a great career in Japan.

Sato had a phenomenal 2026 season for the Hanshin Tigers, slashing .306/.383/.609 with 39 home runs, 40 doubles, 106 RBIs, 100 runs, and a .991 OPS. The 27-year-old is a phenomenal hitter and would be a major addition to the Phillies lineup if they land him.

He could move in as their starting third baseman, but also has the versatility to play first base or left field. Sato has consistently been a strong hitter for the Tigers, slashing .271/.337/.514 with 163 home runs, 185 doubles, 518 RBIs, 437 runs, and an .851 OPS across six seasons.

Adding another power bat into the lineup alongside Harper and Schwarber could give Philadelphia enough to make a deep run in the 2027 season.

Harper had a quality season in 2026, slashing .269/.389/.485 with 29 home runs, 32 doubles, 87 RBIs, 93 runs, and an .865 OPS. He was off to a hot start in the first half of the year, but cooled down after the All-Star break.

Schwarber was the Phillies' best hitter in 2026, slashing .232/.354/.503 with 45 home runs, 20 doubles, 97 RBIs, 95 runs, and an .857 OPS. Although Harper and Schwarber were productive, Philadelphia didn't get enough out of their offense.

Signing a player like Sato would be a phenomenal addition for Philadelphia and help them make it back to the World Series for the first time since the 2022 season, when they lost to the Houston Astros.

They have a solid pitching rotation, but could use more talent in the lineup to make a deeper run in the postseason. In 2026, they fell in the Wild Card Series to the Atlanta Braves in three games, failing to score more than four runs in a game.

The Phillies' window of being a contender around Harper and Schwarber won't last much longer, and they must be buyers and capitalize over the next few seasons to try and win their first title since 2008.
