The Philadelphia Phillies are preparing to make a front office decision that will divide the fanbase.

The Philadelphia Phillies are smack dab in the middle of National League Wild Card contention, but that doesn't mean they don't have significant flaws.

The Phillies lack starting rotation depth, their bullpen is a mess and their lineup is incredibly thin. And that has a whole lot to do with Philadelphia largely standing pat last winter.

Dave Dombrowski has long been one of the most renowned executives in baseball, but there is no question the job he has done in Philly the last couple of years has been questionable.

The Phillies' farm system has been reduced to bottom tier (which is a staple of Dombrowski-led ballclubs), and their aging roster is declining by the day.

However, just when Philadelphia fans thought they might be seeing the end of Dombrowski after the 2026 campaign, they were greeted with a surprise by MLB insider Bob Nightengale over the weekend.

Nighengale has reported that not only is Dombrowski's job safe, but he is expected to land a contract extension this offseason.

"Dombrowski is in such good standing with the Phillies and owner John Middleton that when he received his last contract extension in 2022, he wanted a two-year deal. He was offered a four-year deal. They split the difference and Dombrowski received a three-year deal extension through 2027," Nightengale wrote. "This time, it’s likely Dombrowski’s call again how long of a deal he desires."

This is sure to aggravate a good portion of the Philadelphia fanbase, as many fans have been deservedly frustrated with Dombrowski.

Heck, Bryce Harper also probably wishes the 70-year-old would head elsewhere after all of the verbal clashing Harper has done with him over the course of the season.

Nevertheless, Phillies ownership is evidently very satisfied with the work Dombrowski has done. To be fair, he does have the team in the playoffs virtually every year, which is certainly a nice feather in his cap.

Dombrowski also has a pair of World Series titles to his name, having won with the Florida Marlins in 1997 and then again with the Boston Red Sox in 2018.

And of course, he took the Phillies to a World Series appearance in 2022.

But this is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately city, and given Philadelphia's bloated payroll, that's understandable.

Fans are tired of early October exits. They want to see another deep postseason run, and they aren't sure if Dombrowski can deliver it.
