Phillies-Red Sox Trade Makes Perfect Sense Amid Bo Bichette Buzz cover image

The Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox could come together on a trade amid rumors that the Phillies could land Bo Bichette.

The Philadelphia Phillies seem to be the frontrunners to land Bo Bichette in free agency, which would definitely represent a big boost to their lineup.

The Phillies absolutely need another bat alongside of Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, and Bichette — who registered an .840 OPS with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2025 — could be the answer.

Of course, the weak-fielding Bichette wouldn't be playing shortstop in Philadelphia. Not with Trea Turner aboard. The Phillies could play Bichette at second base and then shift Bryson Stott to the hot corner, or just slide Bichette in at third.

Obviously, either scenario would result in third baseman Alec Bohm being traded, which seems like a long time coming for the former first-round pick who has been floated in trade speculation since last offseason.

But where would Bohm land? Well, what about the Boston Red Sox?

The Red Sox have certainly done a lot of work on their pitching staff this offseason, swinging trades for Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo while most recently signing Ranger Suarez, who spent his first eight big-league seasons in Philadelphia.

Offensively, however, it has been another story for Boston.

Yes, the Red Sox acquired Willson Contreras in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, but they also lost Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency.

Bregman's departure leaves a significant hole at third base for Boston. The Red Sox could hand top prospect Marcelo Mayer the job, or they could try and land a veteran ... like Bohm.

Bohm would make perfect sense for Boston. He has just one year of club control remaining, so the Sox could bring him in, sit Mayer for an extra year and then allow Bohm to walk in free agency next winter. That would open the door for Mayer to become the full-time third baseman in 2027.

The Red Sox could also look at free-agent options like Eugenio Suarez or even Yoan Moncada, but Bohm could represent the best fit from a cost perspective.

The Phillies surely wouldn't ask for too much in return for Bohm, who has been a considerable disappointment since breaking into the big leagues in 2020. And the fact that Boston would have no financial obligation to the 29-year-old beyond 2026 is surely appealing.

If Philadelphia does ultimately sign Bichette (and things appear to be headed in that direction), Bohm is a sure-fire goner. It's hard to imagine a better landing spot than Beantown.
