The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly claimed a former World Series winning pitcher.
The Philadelphia Phillies are doing everything they can to close out the 2026 MLB season strong. With playoff positioning on the line, the team made a new roster move on Thursday.
According to an announcement from the Phillies on X, the team has claimed veteran right-handed pitcher Jose Urquidy off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox.
In addition to the news of Urquidy's claim, the team also announced that right-hander Caleb Killian had been transferred to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the 40-man roster.
"The Phillies have claimed RHP José Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox," the team statement read.
"To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Caleb Kilian was transferred to the 60-day injured list."
It's important to note that Urquidy will not be eligible to be on Philadelphia's postseason roster due to being claimed after September 1. However, he'll be able to eat up some innings throughout the remainder of the regular season.
During the 2026 MLB season thus far split between the White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates, the 31-year-old pitcher has made 11 appearances and one start. He has compiled a 2-2 record to go along with a 5.28 ERA, a 1.52 WHIP, a 3.0 K/BB ratio, and 29 innings pitched. Urquidy has also recorded a save.
At the end of the day, the move doesn't have implications for the playoffs. However, another veteran arm could help the Phillies solidify their playoff positioning.
Currently, Philadelphia holds the second Wild Card spot in the National League. The Phillies trail the Chicago Cubs by just half a game and are one game ahead of the San Diego Padres.
Behind the Padres, the Arizona Diamondbacks are still lurking 3.5 games back of San Diego.
Philadelphia will begin a series against the NL East rival New York Mets on Thursday evening. At this stage of the season, every single game is crucial. Perhaps Urquidy will play a role for the Phillies in their final 10 games.
Urquidy is a former World Series champion. He won his title back in the 2022 MLB season with the Houston Astros. Having that kind of experience over the next 10 games could prove to be valuable for Philadelphia.
