The Philadelphia Phillies add outfield depth by trading for a veteran.

The outfield was always one of the Philadelphia Phillies’ biggest concerns, even going back to the offseason. Not just because of the production of the position group, but simply because of the lack of depth throughout the organization.

That issue became an even bigger concern on Wednesday evening when Adolis Garcia left in the middle of the game with a shoulder injury after trying to throw a Toronto Blue Jays runner out at home.

It’s still unclear just how severe Garcia’s injury is, but from the outside looking in, there is one concerning sign that the injury could keep him sidelined for a prolonged period of time.

With Garcia’s status unclear, the Phillies reportedly made a trade on Thursday to acquire another right-handed hitting outfielder. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Philadelphia is acquiring Derek Hill, an international bonus pool money from the Chicago White Sox, for prospects Dylan Campbell and Jose Colmenares.

Even though Hill is six years into his big-league career, he does have a previous connection to the Phillies organization. Hill was selected in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, the same time that Dave Dombrowski was leading the front office of the American League club.

Looking ahead to 2026, Hill has appeared in 50 games so far this season with White Sox and has accumulated 90 plate appearances. So far this year, the 30-year-old pwns a .213/.284/.375 slash line with four home runs.

Even though the overall numbers don’t immediately stand out, Hill does have some favorable stats against left-handed pitching, which is something the Phillies desperately needed, even before the Garcia injury.

The right-handed hitter has a .789 OPS against southpaws so far this season, and has a .272/.317/.463 slash line off them in his career.

At the very least, Hill could see playing time in the Phillies’ starting lineup as a platoon player.

In terms of where Hill will play in the field, he has experience in all three outfield positions and has started at each of them so far this season with the White Sox. That said, Brandon Marsh in left field and Justin Crawford in center field, it would make the most sense for Hill to get much of his playing time in right field.

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not this trade has anything to do with Garcia’s injury, or if it's simply the Phillies addressing an area of need on the roster.
