Trades within Major League Baseball divisions aren't as crazy as they used to be, something the Philadelphia Phillies could benefit from during the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
The Phillies, now just three games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves as of July 20, sit at 55-45 on the year.
The New York Mets are the one team the Phillies can probably benefit from struggling in the division, as New York sits at 42-58 and is 16 games back in the East.
Reports indicated over the weekend that the Mets were willing to trade nearly all of their players.
There are a few untouchables on the roster, but for the most part, the Mets are content with moving on from guys. One of them is Luke Weaver, though according to the latest report, while the Phillies would love to land Weaver, the price tag might be too high.
"The Phillies, who already were seeking a right-handed hitting outfielder, now are in desperate need of a setup man with veteran Brad Keller out for the year with a torn UCL in his right elbow. They would love to acquire Mets reliever Luke Weaver, but the price tag may be high," wrote Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports in a recent piece updating MLB trade deadline rumors.
That's the one question I think Philadelphia really has to answer during this year's trade deadline. If it is willing to move on from multiple pieces, there's really no excuse why the Phillies can't land some of the better players available. I don't want to say Weaver is a perfect option, as there are better closers out there like Mason Miller, but he figures to be one of the better players available.
I don't think the Phillies should enter this year's deadline without trying to go all in, as they really don't have many more seasons as an elite roster if things go according to plan.
Weaver is a nice player and I think he would be a good fit for the team. I'm curious, though, if the Mets would trade him to Philly now.
