Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson has opened up on struggling third baseman Alec Bohm.
The Philadelphia Phillies fell to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 10-4 on Tuesday, and in the process, third baseman Alec Bohm struck out struck out with the bases loaded and two out while the Phillies were down by just three in the eighth inning.
Not surprisingly, he was booed.
Philadelphia fans can be ruthless, especially when you are slashing just .153/.227/.220 on the season.
But while Bohm started slow last year, too, there may be more of an explanation for his struggles early on in 2026.
The 29-year-old is currently dealing with some tough off-the-field problems, as he is in the process of suing his parents.
Could that be affecting Bohm's approach at the plate?
Phillies manager Rob Thomson seems to think that the former first-round pick is doing just fine mentally.

But when he does struggle, we don't see the same frustration we saw in the past, so that's good. He's grown up. My door is always open, so if he ever wants to talk about anything -- he hasn't. He seems to be in a really good space.”
Thomson appears to believe that Bohm is on the verge of a breakout, noting multiple times that he thinks Bohm has been swinging the bat better the last couple of games.
Last season, Bohm managed a .576 OPS in March and April before slashing .324/.364/.510 with five home runs and 13 RBI in the month of May.
Perhaps the impending free agent is on a similar path this year, although Philadelphia would obviously like to start seeing some results now, especially given how frustrating the team's offense has been as a whole thus far.
Bohm is a lifetime .276/.325/.411 hitter since entering the big leagues in 2020. He has certainly not lived up to his lofty expectations, but he has also been markedly better than what we have seen from him the first several weeks of 2026.
We'll see if Bohm is able to turn things around as the campaign progresses.
The Phillies will wrap up their three-game set with the Cubs on Wednesday evening.
