The Philadelphia Phillies should probably halt their pursuit of Ketel Marte.

The Philadelphia Phillies have long been viewed as a potential destination for Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, and understandably so.

Marte is one of the best middle infielders in baseball. He is two years removed from finishing third in NL MVP voting. He is under contract through 2030 on an incredibly team-friendly deal. But the Phillies shouldn't pursue him.

We all know that Marte is a terrific player, although his 2026 production (.249/.314/.446) could indicate that the 32-year-old may be on the verge of a decline. But it's everything that comes with Marte that makes him radioactive.

Over the years, Marte has frequently been deemed a clubhouse problem. That his teammates don't like him. That his cold demeanor is not conducive to a winning atmosphere.

It has generally been met with, "Yeah but, he's really good."

And that has been true, but things have now reached a boiling point for the three-time All-Star who owns just a 2.1 WAR this season.

Marte recently abandoned his teammates during a series against the Boston Red Sox and was placed on the restricted list as a result. He was then placed on the injured list with knee inflammation. Nothing fishy about that, right?

To make matters worse, Marte was seen at a casino with his friends during the Diamondbacks' 9-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.

It seems pretty clear that Marte wants out of Arizona (in the middle of a playoff run, mind you), but is he actually worth the risk for the Phillies?

Philadelphia acquired Luis Arraez at the MLB trade deadline, and the move has paid dividends. Arraez is not only one of the best hitters in baseball, but a tremendous clubhouse guy who has clearly moved the needle since his arrival.

So why not just re-sign Arraez over the winter rather than trade prospect capital for Marte, a guy who might not even thoroughly enjoy playing baseball?

There are certainly a whole lot of pros to Marte. He's versatile. He has power. He has a terrific playoff track record. But he's also aging, and it may be reaching a point where the juice is no longer worth the squeeze because of his behavioral problems.

Marte will always be tempting because of how good he is when he is locked in, but Philadelphia does not need that type of headache.
