The Philadelphia Phillies should avoid this All-Star trade.
The Philadelphia Phillies must address their outfield this offseason, and one name that keeps surfacing as a potential target for them is Jarren Duran.
The Boston Red Sox are widely expected to trade Duran in the coming months, as the 30-year-old has appeared to wear out his welcome in Beantown.
Duran is coming off of a miserable 2026 campaign in which he slashed .207/.266/.361 with 20 home runs and 69 RBI over 608 plate appearances.
It was, by far, the worst season of his career, and it could have been indicative of a steep decline rather than just one off year.
Duran is under club control through 2028, which could make him a rather intriguing reclamation project for some teams, but the Phillies should not be one of them.
Philadelphia needs bats who can help them immediately. Duran certainly represented that a couple of years ago, when he slashed .285/.342/.492 with 21 homers, 48 doubles and 14 triples, but he has fallen off a cliff since then.
In fact, Duran's decline started last season, when he posted a .774 OPS. He was still solid in 2025, but he wasn't quite as effective as he was the year prior.
Things then completely unraveled for Duran in 2026, and he has also displayed some questionable attitude problems to boot.
The Phillies' outfield was one of the worst in the majors this season. Last winter, Philly tried to patch things up by signing Adolis Garcia, which was a bad decision from the start.
Philadelphia can't afford to acquire players in need of a rebound campaign yet again. If the Phillies are serious about winning now, they must bring in guys they know are capable.
Duran is good defensively and was a very solid hitter between 2023 and 2025, but with the former seventh-round pick now in his 30s, it's very possible — if not entirely likely — that his best days are far behind him.
Yes, the free-agent market is thin, and we don't yet know any other outfielders who will definitely be available via trade. But Philadelphia shouldn't make a move just for the sake of it. That's especially considering the Phillies don't exactly have a ton of trade assets to begin with.
The idea of Duran sounds good. But whether or not he can actually recapture his form from a couple of years ago is the real question. That's something on which Philadelphia cannot afford to gamble.
