The Philadelphia Phillies wasted a strong effort from starter Aaron Nola, collapsing in the end against the Atlanta Braves today.

The Philadelphia Phillies took a gut-punch to the chest on Sunday, dropping their game to the Atlanta Braves 5-4.

But it wasn't the fact that Philadelphia lost the game that was the kicker, but rather how they dropped it. The Phillies entered the eighth inning with a 4-1 lead, following an impressive outing from starting pitcher Aaron Nola.

Nola fired seven innings, allowing just four innings and one run, striking out five batters. The right-hander did his part in this game, giving the ball over to the bullpen in a crucial game.

But the bullpen wasn't able to hold the lead, with right-hander Alex McFarlane giving up a three-run home run to Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. to tie the game. Alex McFarlane was then relieved of his duties, being replaced with

In a tie game in the ninth inning, manager Don Mattingly turned to closer Jhoan Duran. Duran, who has been great for the Phillies this season, ended up giving up the go-ahead run on a triple from Braves catcher Austin Riley.

For the year, Duran owns a 1.72 ERA, making his struggles even more eye-opening. But Philadelphia couldn't muster up the tying run in the ninth, falling to the division rivals yet again.

This game hurts, mainly because the Phillies had a chance to cut the National League East division down to three games. But now, the lead is back to five games heading into the finale on Monday.

Nola was the bright spot for Philadelphia here, as the right-hasner looked dominant in a massive game. 2026 has been a struggle for the veteran, with him seeing very inconsistent outings.

Overall, Nola has a 4.76 ERA over 29 starts this year. While the team couldn't hold on to get the win for him, this performance could bode well for Philadelphia down the line if Nola can continue to pitch well.

Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber hit a home run in the game, notching number 41 of the season. Outfielder Derek Hill also hit a pinch-hit shot early in the game, giving the Phillies the lead.

But this wasted chance could come back to haunt the Phillies if they aren't able to climb back into the division.

Luckily for the Phillies, the two teams will play another series against each other in Atlanta in the coming week. But this was a massive missed opportunity for a club that has been fighting an uphill battle all season in the division.
