The Philadelphia Phillies just swung a blockbuster deal.
Things were looking bleak for the Philadelphia Phillies with the MLB trade deadline looming, but they have managed to strike a deal.
ESPN's Jeff Passan has reported that the Phillies have acquired second baseman Luis Arraez in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, providing some much-needed help to a very thin lineup.
Philadelphia also landed Giants reliever Caleb Kilian in the trade, sending pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to San Francisco in return, per MLB insider Jayson Stark.
A three-time batting champion, Arraez is slashing .324/.360/.440 with four home runs and 43 RBI over 464 plate appearances this season. He has racked up 23 doubles and seven triples while also stealing 10 bases without getting caught.
What's more, Arraez is batting .382 with runners in scoring position, something that has plagued Philadelphia all season long.
Arraez is a lifetime .318 hitter, making him the active big-league leader in batting average. His presence in a lineup that also includes Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh should provide Philly with a huge lift.
Meanwhile, Kilian had logged a 4.26 ERA in 45 relief appearances for San Francisco this season. His 3.59 FIP indicates he has pitched better than his ERA indicates, and he is averaging an impressive 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings.
Kilian broke into the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2022 and had a disastrous brief run in the Windy City, posting a 9.22 ERA over eight appearances and five starts.
The 29-year-old signed with the Giants in free agency over the winter and ended up becoming a key piece of their bullpen throughout the course of the 2026 campaign.
The Phillies were in dire need of both offense and bullpen help heading into the trade deadline, and they absolutely addressed two needs in one with the deal.
Arraez was one of the top bats available, so the fact that Philadelphia was able to net him — without surrendering a ton in terms of prospect capital — is definitely a coup for a team that is hanging on for dear life in the NL Wild Card race.
The Phillies had lost eight of nine before taking the final two games of a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend.
Philadelphia will face the Washington Nationals on Monday evening. We'll see if Arraez is in the lineup at Citizens Bank Park.
