Many have suggested that the Philadelphia Phillies could move on from some of their top prospects this winter if it means they're getting a massive return or a big league player who could truly help this team get closer to winning a World Series.
On the surface, there aren't a ton of trade candidates out there who would warrant moving on from some of their top prospects outside of Ketel Marte, and we've already spoken about him a few times.
Among the other options that others want the Phillies to potentially take a look at is Jarren Duran, the left-handed-hitting outfielder for the Boston Red Sox. Duran is a tough player to evaluate in some sense, as he's had moments where he looks very good, but his 2025 campaign was below average for his standards.
When at his best, there's an opportunity to be an All-Star, but his lows are rather low, and that's ultimately something the Phillies will have to consider if they want to move on from prospects for him.
It would be a bit surprising to see Duran be too expensive, but the Philadelphia Inquirer believes he could cost Aidan Miller, who many view as the top prospect in the Phillies system.
“Infielder Aidan Miller to the Red Sox for outfielder Jarren Duran. Boston already has a logjam in its outfield, and top outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia is near-MLB ready. That makes the Red Sox logical trade partners for the Phillies, who need outfield help.
“Duran, who primarily plays left field but has seen time at all three outfield positions, has a controllable contract through 2028. Last season, the 29-year-old slashed .256/.332/.442 and hit 16 home runs. He also posted 11 defensive runs saved, which ranks second behind Steven Kwan among MLB left fielders. He’s speedy as well, ranking in the 91st percentile of sprint speed,” Lochlan March wrote.
I'm uncertain if I'd move on from Miller for a player of Duran's caliber, although I understand the appeal behind it. It's evident that Philadelphia has been looking for outfield help over the past few years, but Miller has really proven a lot recently, and although he's young, it's tough to move on from the future in a short-sighted move.
