The Philadelphia Phillies should be one of baseball’s biggest buyers ahead of the MLB trade deadline. 

The team should still be in win-now mode despite their current position in the playoff race, and the roster has some clear needs: offense and a pitcher.

There’s one team that could be a one-stop shop and the perfect trade partner for the Phillies ahead of the deadline. The Los Angeles Angels have an outfielder and a pitcher who would be perfect fits for Philadelphia.

The Phillies immediate need is offense, specifically from the outfield, and there might not be a better player for the team to target than Jo Adell.

Adell has slightly come back to earth after a breakout 2025 season when he hit 37 home runs. Still, the 27-year-old has a slash line of .250/.293/.391 in 312 at-bats this season and could supply some pop from the back half of the Phillies lineup. 

What really makes Adell a good fit for the Phillies is that he’s a right-handed hitter and would give Philadelphia some much-needed balance to their lineup.

At the very least, Adell would be a great platoon option, as he owns a .826 OPS against left-handers this season, which is on par with his career numbers against southpaws. 

There would definitely be a role for Adell in the Phillies’ lineup.

The Phillies’ need for more starting pitching has really been highlighted by Andrew Painter’s struggles. In light of the rookie being optioned to Triple-A, Philadelphia was forced to go with an opener and pseudo-bullpen game in his turn in the rotation.

Reid Detmers could give the Phillies another starting option, and more, thanks to his career experience. 

Some may look at Detmers as a pitcher who can’t figure out whether he’s a starter or a reliever. That could work in the Phillies' favor, though, especially in a potential playoff series where the rotation shrinks anyway. 

Detmers is in the middle of a really nice season, logging a 3.93 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP with a strikeout rate of 27.2 percent in 16 starts. 

A recent report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale indicated that the Angels were not interested in moving either of these players before the deadline.

However, a lot can change over a month in the baseball world, and if they do become available, the Phillies should see what it would take to acquire Adell, Detmers, or both players.
