The Philadelphia Phillies' next move after Adolis Garcia's injury should be clear: make a trade.
It’s going to be a long time before Adolis Garcia is back on the field. The Philadelphia Phillies opted to immediately place him on the 60-day injured list with a lat strain following his early absence during Tuesday night’s contest.
The Phillies were heavily relying on the former All-Star to put together a bounce-back season, and outside of a recent seven-game stretch, that just hasn’t worked out as planned.
Still, losing Garcia to the injured list until, at the very, very earliest, the middle of August, if not the entire season, is a blow to the roster, and the Phillies must consider some drastic measures to bolster the outfield.
The Phillies Must Trade For (Yes, Another) Outfielder
A day after Garcia was injured, the Phillies decided to trade for outfielder Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox. The veteran has some nice splits against left-handed pitching, but isn’t a long-term fix for Philly’s vacancy in the outfield.
Yes, Philadelphia’s young duo of Justin Crawford and now, Gabriel Rincones Jr., have the potential to make a big impact for years, but there the rookies are bound to go through some learning curves and growing pains during the 2026 season
It’s clear what the Phillies next move must be: the need to trade for another outfielder.
Even with Garcia on a hot streak, the Philadelphia outfield has its holes, concerns, and drawbacks, primarily at the plate. The Phillies outfield owns a .661 OPS and an 82 wRC+ so far this season, which ranks 26th and 28th in MLB, respectively.
Plus, that’s with Brandon Marsh putting together a career year at the plate. He currently has a .322/.357/.498 slash line on his own.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Phillies must be scouring the market for another outfielder to add to the mix. If anything, a trade for another outfielder would give the team some more depth at the position, something that was also a concern in the winter.
Baltimore Orioles’ Taylor Ward would be a tremendous fit with this team. Boston Red Sox’s Jarren Duran has the potential to add a boost to the position group. San Francis’s Casey Schmidtt would provide a boost on offense
The options are out there.
Now, it’s up to the Phillies’ front office to make a move to fortify one of the biggest needs on the roster currently has.
