Jesús Luzardo was set to become a free agent after the 2026 season, but the Philadelphia Phillies made sure that didn’t happen. The organization signed Luzardo to a five-year extension earlier this week, keeping him in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future.
Philadelphia’s rotation has the potential to be one of the best in all of MLB in 2026, but there are still some big unknowns with the group, too.
Those question marks include Zack Wheeler, who is coming off major surgery, Aaron Nola, who had one of his most underwhelming seasons a year ago, and Andrew Painter, who could face some learning curves as a rookie.
Philadelphia needs a sure-fire arm it can rely on at the top of its rotation, and Luzardo can be that pitcher.
In his first season with the Phillies, he pitched to a 3.92 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP over 183.2 innings. Not only was Luzardo elite, but he was also reliable.
Of course, Luzardo’s extension gives the Phillies a top-end of the rotation arm for years to come, but most importantly, he’ll be a key piece in helping the team win right now.

Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn ImagesLuzardo already has seven big-league seasons under his belt and owns a career ERA of 4.19. That said, he’s still only 28-years-old, and could still have his prime years ahead of him.
Luzardo continues the trend of improving his stats from season to season, especially in the advanced metrics. Last year, he logged the lowest FIP (2.90) of his career as a starter, had the second-best strikeout rate (28.5 percent), and his 5.3 WAR was the best of his career by a wide margin.
There’s a very real possibility that Luzardo could finish as a Cy Young finalist if he continues this upward trend, which would have only increased his value on the open market as a free agent. The Phillies made the smart decision of signing him now.
A player can be a great fit on paper, but if they’ve bought into the city and organization as a whole, that’s when something special can truly happen.
Luzardo was looking for somewhere that he could call home after being traded three times during his career, and he found that in Philadelphia. Luzardo made it clear during his extension press conference that he wants to be a Phillie, help the team win, and find some stability for his family in the city.
The stars aligned for both sides in negotiations, and the Phillies and Luzardo are better off for it.
