As long as Edmundo Sosa is swinging a hot bat, the Philadelphia Phillies need to give him more opportunities.

The Philadelphia Phillies' slide to start the season continues, as the team lost another series, the latest to the Chicago Cubs.

At some point, Rob Thomson must start making some adjustments to his lineup if he wants to get his team back on track in the National League East. That could force the Phillies to start making some changes to their lineup, and one of those should be giving Edmundo Sosa more playing time.

Sosa is off to a very strong start to the 2026 season at the plate, logging a .286/.348/.524 slash line, including two doubles, a home run, and five RBI.

It’s been a small sample size with Sosa only receiving 21 at-bats in nine games, but it’s hard to deny that the 30-year-old has been one of Philadelphia’s best, and in many cases, most consistent hitters the Phillies have on their roster.

With Sosa producing when given the opportunities, there’s a strong case to make that he should be getting more playing time from the Phillies. Of course, if he is getting more playing time, it means someone will lose out on at-bats.

Thankfully, Sosa is an incredibly versatile player who can play both infield and outfield, giving the Phillies multiple avenues to get his bat into the lineup. So far in 2026, he’s played at shortstop, second base, and third base. Plus, he has some experience playing the outfield, too.

Trea Turner isn’t losing time at shortstop, that’s for sure. Bryson Stott was off to a slow start at the plate, but his defense is still tremendous. The most logical position for Sosa to get more playing time at is third base, especially with Alec Bohm continuing to slump at the plate, and with Sosa also being a right-handed hitter.

Sosa did play in all three games against the Cubs and went 3-for-9 at the plate, including a three-run home run in the opener. Perhaps this recent uptick in at-bats is a sign of what’s to come for the Phillies and their lineup.

As outlandish as it may sound, the Phillies dramatically need more offense, especially from the back half of the lineup. As long as Sosa is swinging a hot bat, he should be in the Phillies lineup and seeing more opportunities.
