Several Pittsburgh Pirates prospects are off to a hot start in the 2026 Arizona Fall League.
The Pittsburgh Pirates’ big-league team has already settled into the offseason, but baseball never stops.
A group of the team’s top prospects is currently competing out in the desert as part of the MLB Arizona Fall League. After about a week’s worth of games, here’s how each player is performing at the plate.
Wyatt Sanford (No. 5)
The best Pittsburgh prospect competing in the Arizona Fall League is infielder Wyatt Sanford. So far, the 20-year-old has logged every part of the organization’s top-five prospect that he is.
Sanford has seen 22 at-bats in his first six games and is hitting .318 at the plate. Six of the left-hander’s hits have been singles, but Sanford has also smoked a home run, showcasing the increased power he added to his arsenal during the 2026 season.
There’s been a lot to like about what Sanford has done in the box through the first week of games.
As the AFL continues, it would be nice to see Sanford improve his at-bat quality. He has already punched out six times so far, which is a strikeout rate of 27 percent.
Both Sanford and the Pirates could call the Fall a success if he finishes with more or just about the same walks as strikeouts, but the power still remains a true threat.

Easton Carmichael isn’t off to as good a start offensively as his prospect counterpart. The 22-year-old has only played in three games, with two hits to his name in 13 at-bats. Each of those balls he’s put into play has turned out to be a single for the catcher.
Carmichael has been hot and cold at the plate since the start of his Minor League career in 2025. He has a career .778 OPS across three different Minor League levels.
Of course, a catcher’s assignment during any game could be different than everyone else on the field. However, it would be nice to see Carmichael get his bat going a little more during the Fall League so he has something to build on throughout the rest of the offseason.
Jhonny Severino (No. 28)
The Pirates have been waiting for a breakout season from Jhonny Severino for over four years at this point, and are hoping to see some flashes of that during his time out in the desert.
So far, Severino is off to a decent start to his Fall League action. The third baseman already has four hits, including a double and a home run, for a .954 OPS. He also has just one more strikeout than walk, which has
It’s been a small sample size, but Pittsburgh has some reasons to be encouraged about what Severino has done in the Fall League.
Something to think about during the Fall League is that Severino is Rule 5 eligible. Will he do enough for Pittsburgh to add him to the 40-man roster this offseason?
