The youngster sees a lot of value in the veteran.
It's really cool to see some young players on the Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot to say about some of the current issues, whether it be in the organization, Major League Baseball as a whole, or anything else.
For youngster Konnor Griffin, who has the chance to be one of the better players in Major League Baseball over the next couple of seasons, he's been somewhat outspoken early on. Griffin has said that he enjoys his time in Pittsburgh, got an extension, and seems to be a clubhouse favorite. That's why it's awesome to see that he's sticking up for some of the other guys in the organization, who, while they might be a bit older, haven't been paid as handsomely as him.
Instead of being a young guy who doesn't want to talk about what the team needs to do, it sounds like he's very open to making suggestions.
He recently did so when speaking about veteran second baseman Brandon Lowe and left-handed slugger Ryan O'Hearn, who obviously had a major impact on the lineup. Speaking about Lowe specifically, it sounds like Griffin wants him back with the team next season.
“I mean, we don’t win (82) games without Brandon Lowe this year,” Griffin said, crediting Lowe and O’Hearn for changing the clubhouse culture, per TribLive.
“What the Pirates want to see, a winning team, we don’t do that without them. I’ll say that Brandon, he’s been awesome to play the middle with. I’ve learned a lot. He’s just got a lot of really good experience at the highest level, going all the way up to the World Series. I can pick his brain so much on a lot of different things. It’s helped me out a lot.”
A middle-infield duo of Lowe and Griffin can be one of the better ones offensively in all of Major League Baseball when things are going right.
For a guy like Griffin, it's also awesome to have a veteran like Lowe around for him who can teach him the ropes of this league. Playing in Major League Baseball is no easy task, so having veterans like that around for the Pirates should be at the top of the priority list.
Even if we take away what Lowe does offensively, there's a lot of value in having a guy like him around who just simply understands what it takes.
