Multiple baseball sources reported Monday night that Miller will be replacing Oscar Marin, who was fired two days after this season, following six years with the Pirates.
Murphy spent the past five seasons as the Houston Astros' assistant pitching coach. He first served under Brent Strom in 2021, then under Josh Miller from 2022-25. Strom was the Pirates' assistant pitching coach this year before resigning at the end of the season.
However, Murphy's coaching roots go back to the high school level. He was on the staff at Roselle Catholic, his alma mater in New Jersey, from 2010-11 and 2012-13.
Murphy was also a volunteer coach at Georgetown University in the spring of 2013. He spent the summer coaching with the Rockville Express in the Cal Ripken Collegiate League.
Murphy became a full-time college pitching coach at Brown University in 2014 and spent two seasons there before joining the Astros in 2016. His first job with Houston was serving as the pitching coach of its Greenville farm in the Rookie-level Appalachian League. Murphy was promoted to Class A short-season Tri-City in 2017 and Double-A Corpus Christi in 2018.
The Astros promoted Murphy again in 2019 when they named him their minor-league pitching coordinator. Also in 2019, current Pirates manager Don Kelly spent his lone season on the Astros' major-league coaching staff before becoming Pittsburgh's bench coach for Derek Shelton.
Miller spent two seasons overseeing the Astros' minor leaguers before being promoted to the major-league staff in 2021. Miller's biggest highlight came in 2022 when the Astros won the World Series. Houston also qualified for the postseason each year from 2021-24 before missing the playoffs this year on a tiebreaker.
The Astros finished behind the Pirates in ERA in 2025. Houston's 3.86 mark was 11th in the major leagues while the Pirates were seventh at 3.76. In Miller's first four seasons on the Astros' coaching staff, they finished seventh, second, eighth, and seventh
Miller pitched three seasons at Rutgers University, where he earned a degree in psychology with a minor in history. He then spent his last collegiate season as a graduate transfer at Wagner College, where he completed an MBA in management.
Kelly's wife, Carrie Walker, played on the women's basketball team at Wagner and scored 1,288 career points from 2000-04.
