Paul Skenes is one of the only bright spots for the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2025 MLB season. It has been a long year for the fans, but they at least have had the chance to watch one of the best young pitchers in the game.
Since coming into the league, Skenes has been a forced to be reckoned with. His power relationship with Olivia Dunne has further solidified his brand.
With that being said, Skenes recently set another historical Major League Baseball mark.
As shared by Jim Rosati on X, Skenes has a 2.01 career ERA through his first 51 starts for the Pirates. That stat gives him the lowest ERA through 51 career starts in the Live Ball Era.
That is just another sign of the stardom that Skenes has created for himself.
So far this season with Pittsburgh, Skenes has made 28 starts. He has compiled a 9-9 record to go along with a 2.05 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, a 4.9 K/BB ratio, and 167 innings completed. Once again, he has lived up to the hype.
At just 23 years old, the future is as bright as it could possibly be. Skenes gives the Pirates reason to hope that they can turn things around and get back to being a playoff contender.
Unfortunately, while Skenes has been dominant this season, Pittsburgh hasn't seen the same success as a team. To this point in the year, the Pirates hold a 61-77 record entering Tuesday's night's home matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Skenes and Pittsburgh. Will he remain with the franchise long-term? Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, there were some rumblings about a potential trade in his future.
Obviously, the Pirates and fans are hoping to see Skenes stick around for many years to come. Seeing him leave town would be one of the most painful experiences in franchise history.
All of that being said, Pittsburgh needs to figure out how to win in order to keep Skenes. He is an extremely competitive player. If the Pirates can't start winning baseball games, it will become increasingly more likely that the superstar ace will grow tired of losing and potentially search for greener pastures.
