Pirates Could Be 'In Mix' For Jazz Chisholm Jr. This Offseason

The Pirates may be looking to make a splash move this winter.

The big question for the Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason is whether the front office is going to spend money.

Historically, the Pirates have shied away from spending heavily, but given where the franchise is currently, it makes sense for them to do so. Pittsburgh finished last season with a record of 82-80, showing themselves to be very competitive.

While a postseason berth didn't happen, the Pirates have their eyes set on 2027 as the year that the long drought ends. But for this to happen, the front office may have to change how it has operated in recent years.

One name that makes a lot of sense for the Pirates could be veteran Jazz Chisholm Jr, who will be a top free agent this offseason. Chisholm has spent the last few years with the New York Yankees, but the two sides aren't expected to reunite this winter.

MLB Trade Rumors mentioned that the Pirates could be a team "in the mix" for the veteran outfielder this offseason. But the projected price tag of Chisholm could be a problem for Pittsburgh, with it coming in at two years, $40 million, with an opt-out.

If the Pirates were willing to throw some money at the veteran, he may elect to sign in Pittsburgh, even for one year. This could help the team break the long playoff drought, with Chisholm bringing his energy to the clubhouse.

While there are many reasons to not go after Chisholm, including his lack of focus at times, he is a two-time All-Star for a reason. The veteran did put together an underwhelming year for the Yankees in 2026, but this could help a team like the Pirates out.

Last season, Chisholm hit .231 with 19 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases, while posting an OPS of .711. Even in an "underperforming" year, Chisholm was still able to make an impact for the Yankees on the field.

His speed on the base paths could be a weapon for the Pirates, giving this team more firepower to work with. Chisholm could also help shore up one of the outfield positions, while also having the versatility to play almost any spot on the infield.

If the Pirates don't retain Brandon Lowe this offseason, going after someone like Chisholm could make sense. Giving him a large one-year deal, with an opt-out could work, and Pittsburgh's roster for 2027 could benefit greatly.
