This would be brutal.

A couple of Major League Baseball teams will get in the Pittsburgh Pirates' way if they want to avoid a potential Brandon Lowe situation.

It's clear right now that the fan base wants Lowe to return, but if the Pirates have shown us anything throughout much of their existence, it's that they typically don't like to spend on top free agents.

It's unfortunate we have to say this, but it's the honest truth.

Among the teams that could be interested in Lowe, a squad like the New York Yankees makes a lot of sense.

The Yankees have put themselves in a position where they need to make multiple moves this offseason as well, similar to the Pirates, but in a different way.

What that means for a guy like Lowe is unknown for now, though there's reason to believe New York could be interested because of the Jazz Chisholm Jr. situation. Chisholm is set to hit free agency this offseason and is expected to have a path to leave New York.

“Maybe the Pirates’ 82 wins, their most since 2018, will embolden them to spend, though Lowe’s contract could feature both a big annual salary and a good amount of years. That combination might be more than Pittsburgh’s front office can stomach, which would be music to the ears of a certain major-market big-spender with question marks at Lowe’s second base position.”

“Prediction: Lowe signs with the New York Yankees,” Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report wrote.

I don't think it's crazy to say that Lowe ending up with the Yankees would be a better outcome for New York.

As for Pittsburgh, they might be interested in a guy like Chisholm to replace Lowe. They're both completely different players, despite playing the same position. We could find some similarities, but beyond Chisholm and Lowe having above-average power, which Lowe has frankly shown more of throughout his career, they don't feel comparable at all.

Chisholm does other things pretty well, including stealing bags and offering defensive versatility that Lowe doesn't, and while he might get paid more, I think it's fair to say Lowe is the better player and the one a contending team would rather have.
