The Pittsburgh Pirates need to add another power bat this offseason.
As the MLB offseason moves forward for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the organization has to figure out the plan for the upcoming winter.
After going 82-80 this past season, the Pirates need to make moves this offseason that will help them keep growing as a team. The last thing that the organization should do is sit on their hands when it comes to adding to the roster.
Pittsburgh has a nice core group on the roster, but this team needs a little more help to get over the hump to reach the postseason. The Pirates last made the playoffs in the 2015 season, meaning that the franchise has seen over a decade-plus of poor baseball.
2027 could be the year for this group, if the front office is willing to spend a little bit of money. But whether this ownership group will allow them to do so remains one of the bigger questions from the offseason.
If Pittsburgh does look to spend, one name that could make sense is veteran outfielder Seiya Suzuki of the Chicago Cubs. Suzuki will be a free agent this offseason, and the Pirates should look to target him.
According to Spotrac, Suzuki is being valued at a four-year contract that is worth $109.9 million for this upcoming offseason. While the Pirates have historically sat out of free agency like this, Suzuki could be a solid addition to this team for the next few years.
One of the bigger problems for the Pirates this past season was the team's inability to hit left-handed pitching. Suzuki could help solve that problem, with him having hit .279 with 29 homers and 99 RBIs in 776 plate appearances over his career after lefties.
The veteran has increased his power numbers in each of the last two seasons, and his bat could be a valuable addition to the Pittsburgh lineup. This past season for the Cubs, Suzuki hit .270 with 26 home runs and 86 RBIs, while posting an OPS of .841.
The Pirates know Suzuki well from all the matchups against them over the years, and if they signed him, it would also help weaken Chicago. Pittsburgh could make a major splash by going after Suzuki, giving this roster more firepower to work with for the 2027 season.
If the Pirates are serious about contending next season, the front office needs to spend a little money this winter. But whether the Pittsburgh front office changes how it has operated is an entirely different story.
