Pirates Should Poach Dodgers Key Free Agent This Offseason
Nov 1, 2026 5:00 PM

The Pirates have a lot of solid free agency options this winter.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be looking to bring in some extra help around the roster this offseason, adding to the team from this season.

One area of need for the Pirates comes from the bullpen, with the front office needing to address this problem. Pittsburgh has a few quality options to use, but overall, there needs to be more help.

Luckily for the Pirates, left-hander Mason Montgomery emerged as the team's closer this year, and he will likely be used in that spot next season. For the year, Montgomery posted a 2.88 ERA over 70 appearances, saving five games.

But the Pirates still need to bring in more help, giving the team more firepower. Teams with strong bullpen units tend to do well in the playoffs, and Pittsburgh needs to take this to heart this offseason.

Alex Vesia Option For Pirates?

If the front office does want to add to the bullpen this winter, one name that could make a lot of sense is veteran left-hander Alex Vesia. Vesia has been with the Los Angeles Dodgers ove the last few years, becoming a key piece to the bullpen for the team.

This past season, Vesia appeared in 76 games for the Dodgers, posting a 2.64 ERA over 58 innings pitched. The left-hander has been one of the more trusted players in the Los Angeles bullpen, and he's helped build the winning culture that the team has seen.

In six seasons with the Dodgers, Vesia has posted sub 3.00 ERA seasons four times, showing dominance out of the bullpen. Los Angeles has used a lot of arms during this time, but Vesia has been a consistent presence for them.

Vesia uses a three-pitch mix to throw hitters off, a slider, a changeup, and a four-seam fastball. While there are only three pitches, Vesia has found ways to get guys out, and he brings the energy everytime that he is out on the mound.

The left-hander doesn't overpower hitters with speed from his pitches, with his fastball typcially coming in around 92.1 mph. But Vesia has found ways to use his mix to generate low hard-hit contact rates, learning from the strong coaching that the Dodgers have to offer.

The Pirates could really use someone like this, adding to the bullpen for the foreseeable fureu of the team. Vesia could bring the championship culture that he elarned with the Dodgers to Pittsburgh, and it could end uop making a major difference.

Overall, the Pirates have to add to the bullpen this offseason, giving the unit a major boost for the 2027 season. Vesia could be one of the stronger names available, and if the Pirates can add him, it could make a big difference next year.
