After a bullpen collapse derailed their postseason hopes, Pittsburgh could land a dominant divisional rival to stabilize the late innings and transform the roster into a contender.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had one of the more interesting seasons in all of Major League Baseball this past year, something that was expected, but ultimately didn't end in the way that anybody wanted it to. The Pirates looked like a team with a chance to make the postseason, but the bullpen and other areas failed them.

The Pirates tried to fix some of the bullpen problems at the trade deadline, but they couldn't. Bringing in guys like Luke Weaver wasn't the wrong idea, but others didn't step up the way Pittsburgh hoped.

As a result, the Pirates missed the playoffs by just a few games, a frustrating moment. However, it also gave Pittsburgh an opportunity to realize what it needed throughout the offseason. If the Pirates don't continue to add on both sides of the baseball, nothing is really going to change.

At the same time, if Pittsburgh does what's needed, especially in the bullpen, it should be in a position to compete at a very high level next season. Bleacher Report recently proposed an intriguing trade to help accomplish that, with the deal landing back a longtime veteran in Trevor Megill for two prospects.

“But do you know who really needs to address the back of its bullpen and is really sick and tired of facing Megill?

“That would be the Pittsburgh Pirates, against whom Megill has made 18 appearances with a 0.51 ERA and 0.62 WHIP. Pittsburgh finally had a winning season in 2026, but fell a few games shy of the much bigger goal of making it back to the postseason. Maybe Megill is the missing piece that gets them there,” Bleacher Report wrote.

This almost feels like too good of a trade not to make.

I liked what I've seen out of Lonnie White in the past, at least as a young prospect. However, he isn't exactly a sure thing right now.

As for Megill, there are better arms out there, but these are the type of players the Pirates should be targeting. They need as much bullpen help as they can get, and he provides it.

Bringing in guys with big-league experience who can get outs at a very high level should be a priority, and he's proven that throughout much of his career.
