Murf Gray wants to impact the Pittsburgh Pirates roster at some point next season.
There have been a handful of prospects in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system over the last few years who have flown through the farm system and reached the big leagues earlier than one might expect.
Two of the best examples of this are Paul Skenes and Konnor Griffin.
Now that the Pirates have shown they're willing to promote their youngest players to the top level, the question turns to who might be next.
There’s a perfect candidate in the organization right now who could be the next young star to take the field at PNC Park; that’s Pittsburgh’s No. 4 prospect, Murf Gray
After Murf Gray was named the Pirates’ minor-league player of the year, he made it clear that his goal in 2027 wasn’t just to continue making an impact in the Minors; he wants to make it all the way up to the Majors at some point in 2027.
The goal that Gray has for himself is the same one that his elite prospect counterpart, Seth Hernandez, has for himself, too. Both players want to help the Pirates next season.
“I share that same goal with Seth,” Gray said. “that’s my goal. Just kind of following him up. As he goes and as I go, it’s going to take a lot of hard work, and I think we’re both willing to do that. So I hope to see both of us up there at some point next year.”

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn ImagesGray may want to be up with the big-league team next year, but is that a feasible objective for the 22-year-old? Honestly, based on the numbers and his current projection, yes, it is.
The 2026 campaign was Gray’s first professional season after being drafted by the Pirates in 2025. He made the most of those opportunities, and Pittsburgh didn’t hold him back from continuing to grow at the next level.
Gray started the season at Single-A, but suited up for 45 games at Double-A by the time the season was over. The stats speak for themselves, too. Gray
The other piece of a potential big-league call-up, out of the player’s control, is whether an opportunity exists. Looking at Gray’s skill set, there very well could be one earlier on in the season.
Gray is a third baseman, and that’s a position the Pirates don’t have locked down for the future. Nick Gonzales, Jacob Gonzalez, and Jared Triolo are fine players, but they aren't the team's future at the hot corner; Gray could be.
On top of that, the Pirates should be exploring how to add another right-handed hitter to the lineup. Gray could be an internal option to fill that void.
The bottom line is that Gray is only going to reach the Majors if he continues to hit. If the numbers from 2026 are any indication, he very well could be in the Pirates starting lineup at some point next season.
