The Pittsburgh Pirates missed in their attempt to sign a third baseman on the free agent market, most notably losing to the National League Central rival Cincinnati Reds for slugger Eugenio Suarez.
However, the Pirates still have third base options in trade. A deal would allow Jared Triolo to move to shortstop and buy time while top shortstop prospect Konnor Griffin, who is just 19, finishes his developmental time in the minor leagues.
Here are five third basemen that Pittsburgh be able to acquire:
Alec Bohm, Phillies: Bohm has become a reliable run producer, who drove in 97 runs in both 2023 and 2024, until that RBI total dropped to 59 last season when he had a .287/.331/.409 slash line with 11 home runs in 120 games. At 29, it’s fair to assume a bounce back in 2026, though it would be a bit of a gamble as Bohm has a $10.2-million salary in his final year before becoming eligible for free agency.
Isaac Paredes, Astros: Paredes appears to be the odd man out in the Astros’ crowded infield, but could certainly help the Pirates after batting .254/.352/.458 with 20 home runs in 102 games in 2025 while being selected to his second straight All-Star Game. Paredes is just 26, has a $9.35-million salary this season, and does not become a free agent until following the 2027 season.
Ryan McMahon, Yankees: McMahon slashed just .214/.312/.381 for the Colorado Rockies and Yankees last season in 154 games, but hit 20 home runs, which would have tied Oneil Cruz for the Pirates’ team lead. McMahon is 31, has two years and $32 million left on his six-year, $70-million contract, and the Yankees might be willing to pay part of that down. His left-handed bat could fit well at PNC Park.
Mark Vientos/Brett Baty, Mets: The right-handed-hitting Vientos and left-handed-hitting Baty went from being a platoon to expendable after the Mets signed free agent Bo Bichette to play third base. Vientos, 26, went deep 17 times last season – after hitting 27 home runs in 2024 – while slashing .233/.289/.413 in 121 games. Baty, 26, hit .254/.313/.435 with 18 home runs in 130 games. He also has a Pittsburgh tie as his wife is a graduate of North Allegheny High School in the northern suburbs. Vientos and Baty are both under contractual control through 2029.
