The Pittsburgh Pirates are apparently trying to be aggressive this MLB offseason, and they even made an offer to Josh Naylor before he re-signed with the Seattle Mariners.
But just because the Pirates are looking to add pieces doesn't mean they won't also subtract some.
Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller has named each team's most likely trade candidate this winter, and for Pittsburgh, it was Johan Oviedo.
"Trading away Paul Skenes would be stunning, but not much else would be from Pittsburgh. Moving Oviedo wouldn't save them much money, but he does represent $2 million they could be spending somewhere else," Miller wrote. "With Skenes and Mitch Keller atop the rotation, Jared Jones maybe back by Opening Day and a strong next wave of Bubba Chandler, Braxton Ashcraft and Tom Harrington already in the majors, they could try to flip Oviedo for a bat."
Oviedo has suddenly become a rather popular name on the trade market, this even though he missed all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and was sidelined for the vast majority of this past season due to a lat injury.

The 27-year-old was impressive for the nine starts he was on the mound in 2025, logging a 3.57 ERA while allowing 26 hits and registering 42 strikeouts over 40.1 innings of work.
During his one full campaign for the Pirates back in 2023, Oviedo pitched to the tune of a 4.31 ERA while surrendering 161 hits and posting 158 punchouts across 177.2 frames. He also issued 83 walks and hit 13 batters, so he struggled with his control.
Oviedo began his big-league career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2020 and was ultimately traded to Pittsburgh in August 2022.
The right-hander has recorded a 4.24 ERA and 1.377 WHIP through 81 outings and 67 starts throughout his MLB tenure. While his numbers aren't impressive on the surface, teams seem to like his analytics, which has made him quite the commodity this offseason.
With the Pirates desperately needing offense, it would not be surprising to see them move Oviedo in exchange for a bat. How much they can actually get in return for Oviedo given his injury history, however, remains to be seen.
