Pittsburgh Pirates Still Looking to Add at This Position cover image

The Pittsburgh Pirates have already made some big additions this winter, and they may not be done just yet.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have already made a handful of additions this offseason, including trading for Brandon Lowe and signing Ryhan O’Hearn and Gregory Soto to free-agent deals. In the blink of an eye, the Pirates have gotten significantly better, and they may not be done making moves just yet.

Pittsburgh general manager Ben Cherington recently appeared on MLB Network Radio and discussed the additions the team has already made this offseason and the position he still hopes to add before spring training and Opening Day.

The Pirates executive admitted that he hopes to add “at least one more position player. It could be on the left side of the infield.”

Yes, Pittsburgh does have Jared Triolo, who made progress in 2025 by logging an OPS of .775 after the All-Star Break, but Cherington noted he could move around the field as a utility player in 2026.

“We've got Triolo, who took a step for [us] last year and we love it. We have a lot of confidence in [Triolo], whether it's at short, or third, or in a multi-position player role,” explained Cherington.

The general manager also noted that the team likes what they’ve seen from Nick Gonzalez and is excited about the eventual impact Konnor Griffin can make, but doesn’t want that to stop the team from upgrading the roster right now.

Cherington continued, “Nick Gonzalez has bounced over there. We've got a really good younger prospect [Konnor Griffin], shortstop, we're excited about; at some point, he’ll impact the team. But I do think that we'd have an interest in adding somehow to the left side of our infield if we can. We'll see what comes,”

The Pirates have shown a willingness to pull off both trades and free agent signings this winter, leaving a lot still on the table.

If the Philadelphia Phillies decide to move on from Alec Bohm, he could be a great fit. Free agent slugger Eugenio Suarez would also be a clear upgrade for the Pirates, too.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Pirates go about addressing the left side of the infield, especially with Cherrington being so open about Pittsburgh’s need for more depth there.
