After relieving Derek Shelton of his duties back in May, after five and a half seasons as the Pirates skipper, the organization decided to reward previously interim manager, Don Kelly as the full-time manager.
Kelly, a Butler, PA native did the best he could with a Pirates team that wasn’t perfect by any means.
After Shelton left him with a 12-26 record, Kelly helped the Buccos to a 59-65 record.
"Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans, and he has certainly earned mine," said Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting. "Donnie took over the team at a true low point. Since then, we've seen meaningful progress, not just in the clubhouse culture, but on the field. His connection to the community and passion for the franchise make him more than just a manager. He is a Pittsburgher; he is part of our community. He's the right fit, at the right time, and is the right person to lead us forward."
Next season will be a pivotal season for the Pirates. There’s a lot of pressure under general manager Ben Cherington to build a perennial contender surrounding star pitcher, and likely Cy Young winner, Paul Skenes.
"Donnie is an elite communicator. He is deeply trusted by our players because he's credible, consistent, and unafraid of tough conversations," Cherington said in a statement. "His background as both a scout and a coach gives him a rare perspective: patience when it's needed, and an unwavering belief in players' ability to improve. Above all, he values people and winning. His ability to adjust, lead, and do the hard work makes him the right leader."
Towards the end of the season, Kelly seemed highly optimistic about the future of the franchise, and seemed to echo Nutting’s comments about “meaningful progress.”
“We’re not as far off as some might think," Kelly said. "We’ve shown flashes of that. I think the consistency is a big thing. Being more consistent in the day-to-day type stuff, eliminating these longer losing streaks. Find a way to win. That’s the thing when you’re going through that.
The organization is expected to hold a press conference at PNC Park at 3:30 p.m. ET to make the official announcement.
