When speaking about what the Pittsburgh Pirates might do during the offseason, it's again fair to suggest that until Bob Nutting actually goes out and makes the necessary moves to ensure this team has a chance to win any time in the near future, he'll have to put his money where his mouth is.
It's fun to think about how much the Pirates could spend, or landing two or three elite hitters, but until he does it, I'm going to be on the side of caution.
Regardless, it sounds like that's the feeling around Major League Baseball in general. Andy McCullough of The Athletic put out a nice piece about what the Pirates might do, and while he added that the Pirates are making noise about wanting to spend, it's probably best to hold off until they actually get something done. If they were to get something done, he believes Eugenio Suarez would be an ideal fit.
“The Pirates are making noise about wanting to spend. Ask anyone within shouting distance of the Monongahela River — actually, ask anyone who knows how to spell “Monongahela” — and they will tell you they will believe it when they see it.
"But if owner Bob Nutting is serious about authorizing some expenditures to not waste the early prime of Paul Skenes, there are plenty of players available to aid an offense that ranked last in home runs and slugging percentage in 2025. No Pirate hit more than 20 homers last season. Suárez matched a career-best mark with 49 dingers last season and has averaged 32 per year since 2021,” he wrote.
The Pirates were the worst offensive team in baseball last year, and it wasn't even close.
Adding someone like Suarez doesn't change all those issues, but considering their lack of slugging and home runs in general, adding a player who hit nearly 50 with 49 bombs last year would be a step in the right direction.
Suarez is 34 years old, so the contract situation might get tough, but if they can get him for the price they want, this would be a step in the right direction.
