Eric Nadel, who has called Texas Rangers games for more than 40 years, will be stepping away from the booth.
Eric Nadel, the long-time radio voice of the Texas Rangers, announced on Wednesday that he will not be broadcasting games at the start of the 2023 MLB regular season due to mental health issues.
Nadel released the statement through the team.
“As many of you know for years I have been an advocate for those with mental health issues. I now find myself dealing with anxiety, insomnia and depression which are currently preventing me from doing the job I love. So I regret to say I will not be in the broadcast booth when the season starts.
“I am receiving treatment as I go through the healing process and encourage others with similar issues to reach out to help.
“I am tremendously grateful to Matt (Hicks) and Jared (Sandler) for the superb job they are doing in my absence. Rangers management has been wonderful to me. I thank them for their concern, kindness and understanding. Rangers fans have always given me tremendous support and asked for their continued support at this time and in the future.”
Hicks and Sandler have been calling games during Spring Training.
Nadel has been announcing Rangers games on radio and television since 1979, and is one of the few to call games for 40 years. He has been the team’s lead play-by-play voice on radio broadcasts since 1995. In 2006, Nadel and the Rangers announced that he had a lifetime contract to call games with the team until he retires.
Nadel was selected as the 2014 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually for excellence in broadcasting by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
