The Texas Rangers had an opportunity to claim a series victory over the Miami Marlins with a win in Wednesday afternoon’s rubber match.

Unfortunately, that opportunity slipped through the cracks as the Rangers fell to Miami 4-2 in the final game of the series.

Jacob deGrom got the start for the Rangers and was solid, going six innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits while striking out eight and walking two.

deGrom cruised through the first three innings of the game, but ran into hiccups in the fourth and fifth as Miami used a pair of walks to set up big hits and score both runs against the Rangers ace.

Wyatt Langford got the scoring started in the top fourth inning when he launched a solo home run to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

However, that lead didn’t last long as in the bottom of the fourth, Griffin Conine laced an RBI double to knot things at 1-1.

It didn’t take long for the Marlins to take the lead as in the fifth, Xavier Edwards ripped an RBI single to put Miami up 2-1.

Otto Lopez provided the big swing of the day for the Marlins in the eighth as he hit a two-run home run off Cole Winn in the eighth inning to make it 4-1.

Winn was unable to get out of the eighth, recording just two outs, and with the two earned runs, raising his season ERA to 6.38.

Joc Pederson led off the ninth inning with a solo home run off Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks to make it 4-2, but that was as close as the Rangers would get

The Rangers' offense was largely shut down by Marlins starter Eury Perez, who went 4.2 innings, allowing just the one run on three hits.

Ultimately, it was the Marlins' bullpen, however, that proved to be the deciding factor in this one as four Miami relievers combined to pitch 3.1 innings of one-run ball.

With the loss, the Rangers fall to 38-42 on the season and have now lost back-to-back series on the road.

Manager Skip Schumaker was unable to get the series victory in his return to Miami, where he was the manager in 2023 and 2024.

Texas will now head north of the border to begin a four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night.

MacKenzie Gore is scheduled to get the ball for Texas to make his 17th start of the season. Gore is 4-6 with a 4.07 ERA on the season. The Blue Jays starter is still TBD.
