Now, the Texas Rangers will look to take that momentum on the road as they open a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Monday night.
The Texas Rangers had one of their better series of the season as they swept the Kansas City Royals over the weekend at Globe Life Field.
Now, they will look to take that momentum on the road as they open a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Monday night.
St. Louis has started the season strong, defying expectations and jumping out to a 31-26 record despite having the majority of their roster filled with young players.
The Rangers, of course, only head to Busch Staduim once every two years, but there is no doubt they will have their work cut out for them in one of baseball’s most iconic parks.
Jacob deGrom will take the mound for the Rangers, entering play with a 3-4 record and a 3.77 ERA on the season.
In his last start against the Houston Astros on May 27th, deGrom went six innings, allowing just two runs in what ended up being a 4-3 Rangers loss.
They say momentum is only as good as the next day’s starting pitcher, and the Rangers no doubt feel confident that deGrom can help them carry forth their momentum from this weekend and start their brief road trip off strong.
Offensively, the Rangers will face Cardinals’ right-hander Michael McGreevy, who enters play at 3-4 with a 2.98 ERA on the season.
Brandon Nimmo and Josh Jung are the only Rangers to ever face McGreevy in a big-league game. Both are 0-3 in their careers against the young Cardinals arm.
Contact will once again be a key for the Rangers as they produced perhaps their best bat-to-ball stretch against the Royals over the weekend. The Rangers also used small ball, such as bunts and stolen bases, to manufacture runs.
Surely if a team is out slugging the ball to score their runs, that style of play won’t always travel, but you feel good about contact and small ball heading on the plane to St. Louis.
With their three wins over the weekend, the Rangers have begun to creep back towards .500 as they enter play on Monday with a 28-31 record.
The potential hot run could also come with reinforcements, with both Wyatt Langford and Corey Seager inching closer to returning from injury.
Langford played in a pair of rehab games with Triple-A Round Rock over the weekend and Seager will also play a minor-league rehab assignment this week.
