Tuesday night's series opener against the New York Yankees could not have gotten off to a much better start for the Texas Rangers.
Texas jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning and, on top of that, would send Jacob deGrom to the mound.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, that ideal start would not lead to a win as the Yankees claimed a 7-4 comeback victory.
The Rangers loaded the bases in the first inning and cashed in as Joc Pederson lifted a sacrifice fly to open the scoring.
Ezequiel Duran ripped an RBI single into right field to double the Rangers' lead and make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
Later in the inning, the Rangers would tack on another run via a wild pitch, and it seemed as if Texas had all the momentum.
However, it didn’t take long for New York to swipe that momentum right back. In the bottom of the first, Cody Bellinger ripped an RBI double to score Aaron Judge and put the Yankees on the board.
In the second inning, it was the Yankees eight-hole hitter, Ryan McMahon, who took deGrom deep over the right-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
After neither team scored until the sixth inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the next to take advantage of deGrom, hitting a home run to put the Yankees ahead for the first time in the game.
In the seventh, Bellinger came through again with a two-RBI double, capping off a tough night for deGrom.
The Rangers ace went 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six earned runs while striking out seven.
In the eighth inning, the Yankees added their final touches on this one as Paul Goldschmidt took Tyler Alexander deep to make it 7-3.
The Rangers would get one back in the ninth as Jake Burger came through with an RBI groundout, but it proved to be too little, too late.
With the loss, the Rangers have now lost their last three games and have fallen to 16-19 on the season.
Texas will be back in action on Wednesday night as they take on the Yankees for Game Two of their three-game series.
Nathan Eovaldi takes the mound for the Rangers, looking to stop their recent losing skid. He will be opposed by young right-hander Will Warren for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CST.
