Following a rare Spring Training off day, the Texas Rangers were back in action on Thursday as they welcomed the Athletics to Surprise Stadium.
Texas used a six-run second inning to take down the A’s 7-6, marking their third consecutive Spring Training victory.
With the win, the Rangers' Cactus League record improves to 11-8, good for third place in the league at the conclusion of play on Thursday.
Jack Leiter got the start for the Rangers for the fourth time this spring and put forth a solid showing in his longest outing yet.
Leiter went five innings, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out six and not walking a single batter on a very efficient 57 pitches.
“I felt good,” Leiter said after his outing. “I felt like I threw the best version of each of my pitches at least a couple of times.
“Obviously, there were some mistakes here and there, but for the most part, everything was where I wanted it to be shape-wise, and I was happy with the majority of the outcomes in terms of execution,” Leiter finished.
Josh Sborz followed Leiter on the mound and had his first real hiccup of Spring Training, allowing three runs, two hits, and a walk in an inning of work.
Offensively, it was a day full of regulars, but it was Wyatt Langford who stole the show with a line-drive, three-run home run to dead center field.
With the blast, Langford has now hit three home runs in nine Cactus League games thus far in Spring.
Brandon Nimmo got the start leading off and playing right field once again. He drew a walk in three at-bats.
Corey Seager got the start at shortstop, hitting third, followed by Jake Burger, who hit fourth and played first base while tallying a base hit.
Joc Pederson hit fifth and served as the designated hitter, striking out and drawing a walk in three at-bats. Evan Carter once again played center field and scored a run.
Both Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran got starts in the infield at second and third base, respectively.
Smith drew a walk and scored a run, and Duran worked two walks and scored a run as well. Catcher Willie Maclver had a big day, ripping a three-run double in the first inning.
The Rangers will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Scottsdale to take on the Colorado Rockies.
