Split Squad games are always an interesting part of every MLB team's Spring Training schedule.
Designed to maximize playing time for the many players who are on each team’s Spring Training roster, split squads feature half of a roster playing at their Spring Training home and the other half heading on the road.
On Thursday afternoon, the Texas Rangers played their first of two split-squad games, with half of the team traveling to take on the Athletics and the other half staying at Surprise Stadium, where they welcomed the Milwaukee Brewers.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, it was a day that ended in two losses as the road team fell to the Athletics 7-3 and the home team lost to the Brewers 5-1.
Veteran starter Cal Quantrill started the road game against the Athletics as he looks to wedge his name into the fifth starter competition conversation.
Quantrill struggled in his second Spring Training start as he gave up six earned runs on eight hits in just 2 2/3 innings.
Also in the road game, Joc Pederson got the start at first base, a position that first-year Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said he will see some time at in 2026.
Pederson had both a base hit and a lineout in a solid day at the plate as he looks to get off to a hot start and bounce back from a rough 2025 season.
The Rangers' home game against the Brewers featured more regulars, as Spring Training home games often do.
Kumar Rocker made his second start of the spring, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Notably, he did not walk a batter while striking out one.
Rocker continues to battle with Jacob Latz for the fifth position in the Rangers' starting rotation to begin the season.
Also pitching behind Rocker was Cole Winn, who went 1 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and two runs.
Offensively in that game, plenty of Rangers regulars had base hits, including Sam Haggerty, Corey Seager, Jake Burger, Danny Jansen, and Josh Smith.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Rangers lineup looks like tomorrow as they are back in one squad traveling to Camelback Ranch to take on the Chicago White Sox at 4:05 ET.
As things stand, the Rangers are currently just over a month away from Opening Day against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Until then, plenty of decisions are still to be made, and there is no doubt that first-year manager Skip Schumaker and his staff will have their hands full.
