Even if it’s Spring Training, Jacob deGrom taking the mound for the Texas Rangers is always a sight to see.
On Tuesday afternoon, deGrom made his second start of the spring as the Rangers welcomed the Chicago Cubs to Surprise Stadium.
deGrom struck out five in three innings of work as the Rangers took down the Cubs 8-3.
“I felt like it went well,” deGrom said after his outing. “I was able to locate the ball well. My slider and changeup were good; the only pitch that wasn’t great was a couple of curveballs, but other than that, I was able to move my fastball around and had good offspeed, so I kinda checked off all the boxes there.”
With the win, the Rangers improved their Cactus League record to 10-8, winning their second straight contest.
Kumar Rocker was the first pitcher out of the Rangers' bullpen following deGrom, and he put forth a solid outing, going four innings, allowing just three hits and two runs while punching out five and not issuing a single walk.
After Rocker, it was regulars Chris Martin and Cole Winn who pitched the final two innings, sealing the win.
Martin allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts, and Winn pitched a clean frame in the ninth.
Offensively, it was a day full of regulars as we creep just inside two weeks away from Opening Day.
Corey Seager had the big swing of the day for the Rangers as he blasted a three-run home run in the first inning.
Brandon Nimmo led off the game and played right field. He had a solid day, picking up a hit and a walk as well as a run scored.
Wyatt Langford got the start in center field and picked up a hit and a run as well. Jake Burger got the start at first base and continued his hot spring, picking up a base hit.
Joc Pederson was in the lineup at DH, meaning Andrew McCutchen played left field in just his second Spring Training game as a Ranger.
McCutchen once again had an RBI hit and drew a walk, continuing to make a strong early impression.
Danny Jansen got the start behind the plate, and Josh Smith played second base and picked up a pair of hits.
Ezequiel Duran got the start at third and hit a two-run home run for the Rangers' other big offensive moment.
Texas will have a rare Spring Training off day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday when they welcome the Athletics to Surprise Stadium.
