Jordan Montgomery continued progressing toward his Texas Rangers return by delivering another encouraging rehab outing.
Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery took another step toward rejoining the major-league rotation on Saturday, turning in a solid performance during his latest rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock.
After Friday's scheduled outing was postponed because of rain, Montgomery returned to the mound in Albuquerque and logged his seventh rehab appearance as he continues working back from Tommy John surgery.
The veteran has not pitched in a major-league game since Sept. 22, 2024, making this rehab assignment a significant milestone in his recovery.
Another encouraging outing
Montgomery pitched 4.1 innings against Albuquerque, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three batters. The Rangers had targeted approximately 75 pitches for the outing, and the left-hander reached that workload as planned.
The outing marked another incremental step in a carefully managed rehab process that has seen Montgomery gradually increase both his pitch count and workload with each appearance.
Return to Texas could be approaching
With seven rehab starts now complete, Montgomery appears to be nearing the end of his assignment.
The Rangers have been deliberate throughout his recovery, focusing on ensuring he is fully prepared before activating him. While no official timetable has been announced, Montgomery could soon become an option to rejoin Texas' starting rotation if the club determines he has reached the necessary workload and consistency.
His return would provide a timely boost for a Rangers team battling for position in the American League playoff race and looking to strengthen its pitching staff for the stretch run.
Rangers taking cautious approach
Although Montgomery's progress has been encouraging, Texas has remained patient throughout the rehabilitation process.
The organization has prioritized long-term health over rushing the veteran back to the majors, recognizing the importance of having him fully built up before asking him to face big league hitters on a regular basis.
With every rehab outing, Montgomery has shown improved command, increased endurance, and steadily rising velocity, giving the Rangers reason for optimism.
Bradford also continues rehab assignment
Montgomery was not the only Rangers pitcher making progress this weekend.
Left-hander Cody Bradford also continued his own recovery assignment on Friday with Double-A Frisco. Bradford delivered three scoreless innings while striking out four batters, another encouraging performance as he works his way back from a UCL-related injury.
With both Montgomery and Bradford trending in the right direction, the Rangers could soon receive reinforcements for their pitching staff as the regular season enters its most important stretch.
