Jacob Latz has stabilized the Texas Rangers, providing the late-inning dominance needed to secure another postseason run.
The Texas Rangers have experienced plenty of highs and lows during the 2026 season. Despite the inconsistency, they enter the All-Star break leading the American League West Division with a 49-47 record.
It has not been an easy path. Texas has battled through difficult stretches all season. Now, the team is beginning to play much better baseball.
That timing could not be more important. The second half will determine whether the Rangers can return to the postseason.
The August 3 trade deadline is also quickly approaching. Texas is in position to become a buyer.
Rangers might make some additions
A few additions could help the team reach the postseason for the first time since winning the franchise’s first World Series in 2023.
Several players have stood out during the first half. Some have exceeded expectations. Others have struggled.
One of the biggest surprises has been closer Jacob Latz. Entering the season, few expected Latz to become one of the Rangers’ most valuable pitchers. Instead, he has emerged as one of the team’s biggest success stories.
Latz has given Texas exactly what every manager hopes to receive from the back end of the bullpen. He has consistently protected late leads and delivered quality innings whenever his number has been called.
Latz has a 1.61 ERA and 0.67 WHIP in 44.2 innings with 18 saves and 46 strikeouts across 35 appearances (one start).
His WAR sits at 2.2, already surpassing his career high. This is the biggest surprise, and it’s a pleasant one for the Rangers.
His emergence has helped stabilize a bullpen that has played an important role in Texas remaining atop the division. Reliable relief pitching often becomes even more valuable during close games in the second half.
The Rangers now know they have a dependable option capable of handling high-pressure situations. That confidence allows the coaching staff greater flexibility throughout every game.
If Latz continues pitching at this level, he could become one of the most important reasons Texas remains in first place.
Are internal improvements coming?
The Rangers will likely look to strengthen the roster before the trade deadline. Even so, internal improvements can be just as valuable as outside additions.
Latz has already provided one of the biggest internal boosts the organization could have hoped for this season.
Latz has earned his success through consistency, preparation, and the ability to stay composed under pressure.
He attacks hitters without hesitation and trusts his approach regardless of the situation. His confidence has continued to grow as the season has progressed, allowing him to handle late-inning opportunities with maturity.
Beyond his performance on the mound, Latz has become a reliable presence that teammates can count on whenever the game is on the line.
Those qualities are difficult to find in any bullpen. They are especially valuable for a team with postseason aspirations.
Latz can remain one of the Rangers’ most dependable arms. His presence gives the team confidence in late innings.
