As the American League West race tightens, the Texas Rangers remain willing to move top prospects for immediate help, but one elite infielder remains strictly off-limits.

When looking at the trade deadline and what it means for the Texas Rangers, this could make or break their season.

It's not like the Rangers are in desperate need of upgrades across the board, but winning the American League West isn't going to be easy with the way they've been playing recently.

If there was ever a time to make some moves, now is the time to do it.

Sitting at 51-51 is only going to get this team so far, and the Seattle Mariners are only half a game back. If that's not scary enough, the Houston Astros are always dangerous, and they're only two games back on the Rangers. Sure, not a single team in the division is better than 5-5 in their last 10, but the Rangers can't sleep on their competition.

Sebastian Walcott is the lone untouchable

To no surprise, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel has named the team's No. 1 prospect their lone untouchable. Walcott is listed as a shortstop and third baseman with an ETA of 2027.

The 20-year-old is still only in Double-A with the Frisco RoughRiders, but that's not to say a promotion isn't in his future. The team doesn't want to rush his development, but in 26 at-bats this season he has a monstrous 1.125 OPS.

Walcott got a late start on the 2026 season due to right elbow surgery, but he's shown no signs of slowing down. His slash line sits at .346/.433/.692, so keeping him in this organization is an absolute no-brainer.

It's worth noting these numbers are a bit inflated since he raked in a pair of games at the Arizona Complex League, but he still has a tremendous .941 OPS in his 20 Double-A at-bats.

Rangers trade deadline plans

McDaniel highlighted six of the Rangers' top 10 prospects who could be on the move in the coming days and weeks. He believes this organization's top is "seems in bounds for a big upgrade," and that seemingly includes everyone not named Walcott.

If the Rangers are going to get some moves done for big league-ready talent, they're going to need to include a few prospects. Right-handed pitchers Caden Scarborough, David Davalillo, Winston Santos, A.J. Russell, and RHP/shortstop Josh Owens have all been mentioned alongside SS Yolfran Castillo and catcher Malcolm Moore.

The Rangers could set themselves back by being too aggressive, but it's going to take another few pieces to get them in a comfortable position down the stretch. On paper, it seems like they're willing to do whatever it takes as long as Walcott stays put.
