Texas Rangers placed Corey Seager on the seven-day Injured List while welcoming Josh Smith back from an extended absence.
The Texas Rangers announced that Corey Seager has been placed on the seven-day concussion-related Injured List. The move comes after a collision at home plate during last week's series against the Kansas City Royals.
The veteran shortstop was injured while attempting to score from first base on a Brandon Nimmo double. During the play, Seager collided with catcher Carter Jensen as Jensen moved to receive a throw at the plate. Seager appeared shaken up following the contact and has not returned to game action since.
The injury adds to what has been a frustrating season for the former World Series MVP.
Searching for Answers at the Plate
Even when healthy, Seager has struggled to produce at his usual All-Star level in 2026.
A stint on the IL earlier this season due to lower back inflammation interrupted his campaign, and his offensive numbers have yet to recover.
Through his games this year, Seager owns a .186 batting average with a .284 on-base percentage and a .373 slugging percentage, numbers that rank among the lowest of his career.
For a Rangers lineup that relies heavily on its veteran stars, another absence from Seager creates additional uncertainty moving forward.
Durán Continues to Capitalize on Opportunity
What began as a season projected to feature Ezequiel Durán in a depth role has evolved into something much larger for the Rangers.
With injuries impacting multiple members of the club's infield, Durán has become an increasingly important contributor. The versatile infielder has taken advantage of the additional playing time, posting a .281/.332/.429 slash line after entering the season looking to rebound from a difficult 2025 campaign.
Smith Returns as Rangers Shuffle Roster
While Seager heads to the injured list, Texas welcomed back Josh Smith from an extended absence.
Smith's season has been interrupted by multiple health issues, including a glute strain, wrist discomfort, and viral meningitis. The utility player had been sidelined for nearly six weeks while working his way back to full health.
His return gives the Rangers another experienced option around the diamond and should help offset some of the depth concerns created by Seager's absence.
With Smith back and Durán continuing to produce, Texas will look to keep its infield afloat until Seager is ready to return.
