The Texas Rangers will once again be without Corey Seager after the star shortstop exited Tuesday's game with recurring back discomfort.

The Texas Rangers have suffered another significant setback in the middle of a tightly contested American League West race, placing shortstop Corey Seager on the Injured List after he experienced back discomfort during Tuesday's game.

Seager exited in the first inning and will now head back to the IL for the third time this season. While the club has not announced a timetable for his return, the latest injury continues a frustrating campaign for one of the franchise's cornerstone players.

To fill the roster spot, Texas recalled versatile infielder/outfielder Josh Smith from Triple-A Round Rock.

Injuries Continue to Disrupt Seager's Season

Health has been the biggest obstacle for Seager throughout 2026.

The five-time All-Star previously missed several weeks with the same back issue before later landing on the injured list again because of concussion symptoms following a collision at home plate. He returned to the lineup on June 25 but appeared in only three games before suffering another setback.

The repeated interruptions have prevented Seager from establishing any offensive rhythm. Across 219 plate appearances this season, he owns a .182 batting average with a .292 on-base percentage and a .374 slugging percentage, well below the production Texas has come to expect from one of baseball's premier offensive shortstops.

Rangers Lean on Versatility

Despite Seager's absence, Texas enters the remainder of the first half in strong position.

The Rangers have won six consecutive games to climb into first place in the AL West, holding a slim lead over the Seattle Mariners while remaining ahead of both the Houston Astros and Athletics in a crowded division race.

Without Seager, manager Skip Schumaker has several internal options to cover shortstop. Ezequiel Duran has already seen time at the position this season and provides a familiar option, while rookie Cameron Cauley offers strong defensive ability and speed.

Smith's return also gives the Rangers another versatile defender capable of moving around the field depending on the matchup.

Important Stretch Ahead

Texas will try to maintain its momentum despite losing one of its most accomplished players.

The Rangers conclude their series against the Cleveland Guardians before opening a nine-game homestand leading into the All-Star break. The club also has a difficult schedule coming up, making the club's ability to overcome Seager's absence especially important.

With the division standings remaining tightly packed, Texas will be looking for its depth to carry the load until its star shortstop is healthy enough to return.
