Texas Rangers lean on Cal Quantrill’s return and Gavin Collyer’s debut opportunity to help at this time.
The Texas Rangers were forced into a series of roster moves following injuries to two key arms, prompting immediate changes to their bullpen structure. Right-handers Chris Martin and Luis Curvelo have both been placed on the 15-day Injured List after exiting a recent loss with arm issues.
Martin is dealing with a shoulder impingement, while Curvelo is sidelined by a biceps strain. Though initially concerning, Curvelo’s diagnosis avoided more serious damage, offering some relief for the organization despite his expected absence for multiple weeks.
Quantrill Returns in Versatile Role
To stabilize the pitching staff, Texas selected the contract of right-hander Cal Quantrill, who is expected to fill a multi-inning role out of the bullpen. Quantrill, a veteran with starting experience, rejoined the organization on a minor-league deal after spending time in multiple rotations last season.
While his recent Triple-A results have been uneven, Quantrill has shown the ability to limit walks and provide length, making him a practical option for a taxed bullpen. His experience as both a starter and reliever gives manager Skip Schumaker flexibility in managing innings during this stretch.
Collyer Earns First MLB Opportunity
Joining Quantrill is right-hander Gavin Collyer, whose promotion marks his first appearance on a major-league roster. The 25-year-old brings a strong arsenal, headlined by a fastball that reaches the upper 90s, along with a developing slider and cutter combination.
Collyer’s minor-league track record has featured high strikeout totals paired with control inconsistencies. However, his early performance this season has shown improved command, giving the Rangers confidence to give him an opportunity in a middle relief role.
Roster Decisions Reflect Depth Priorities
In corresponding moves, Texas designated right-hander Marc Church for assignment. Church has flashed velocity but has struggled to stay healthy and consistent, factors that likely influenced the club’s decision.
Additionally, left-hander Cody Bradford was transferred to the 60-day Injured List as he continues recovery from elbow surgery. While the team has not indicated a major setback, his timeline remains uncertain after experiencing soreness during a recent rehab outing.
Looking Ahead
These moves underscore the Rangers’ reliance on organizational depth early in the season. With multiple pitchers sidelined, the club will look to Quantrill and Collyer for stability and upside as they attempt to navigate a challenging stretch with a reshaped bullpen.
