The Texas Rangers are reuniting with former World Series hero LHP Jordan Montgomery just one day after Spring Training got underway.
Sources have confirmed that Montgomery is signing a one-year, $1.25 million dollar deal to return to Texas.
Coming off his second Tommy John surgery, it’s unclear exactly when Montgomery will pitch again, but he should be available sometime over the summer.
It also still remains to be seen when Montgomery will report to Spring Training; it will mark his first time in Surprise, Ariz., as a Ranger despite having pitched for Texas before.
In 2023, the Rangers acquired Montgomery in a trade-deadline deal with the St. Louis Cardinals in what has already gone down as one of the best trades in franchise history.
Right away, Montgomery had an impact on the club, going 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 regular-season starts as a Rangers but it was what he did in October that made him a DFW legend.
In six postseason appearances, Montgomery went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA, allowing just ten earned runs.
None of his postseason appearances were as important as the first one when Montgomery set the tone in Game one of the American League Wild Card series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Montgomery threw seven shutout innings, which included a spectacular diving catch on a bunt attempt in what would end up being a 4-0 Rangers win.
In Game Seven of the American League Championship Series against the rival Houston Astros, Montgomery threw 2.1 clean innings to help the Rangers clinch the pennant.
During his lone World Series appearance, Montgomery struggled getting the start in Game Two against the Arizona Diamondbacks, going six innings and allowing four runs in the Rangers' lone loss of the Fall Classic.
Following that championship, Montgomery then signed with the D-Backs and struggled before eventually needing surgery and was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers.
Now, Montgomery will look to have some sort of impact on a Rangers team that will feature one of the best rotations in all of baseball with Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, MacKenzie Gore, and Jack Leiter.
Obviously, Montgomery won’t be competing for the fifth starter spot coming out of camp, but if no one has staked it down by the time he comes back, he could certainly be an option there.
Additionally, we have seen Montgomery pitch out of the bullpen with the D-Backs, so that could be another option the Rangers choose to explore.
