The Texas Rangers are most certainly no strangers to having rather famous people in their ownership group.
From former President George W. Bush to Grammy award-winning country singer Charlie Pride and legendary pitcher Nolan Ryan, the Rangers are quite used to having high-profile figures backing them.
Earlier this week, that trend continued as one of the DFW metroplex’s most notable athletes took a jump into the Rangers ownership group.
Detroit Pistons superstar point guard and Arlington, Texas native Cade Cunningham purchased a minority stake in the Rangers.
Cunningham’s ownership stake was aided by his partnership and investment in Sportsology Capital Partners, a consultancy firm that provides advisory services to ownership groups of over 65 major sports franchises across the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, and European soccer.
Last season, Cunningham attended and threw out the first pitch at a 6-0 Rangers win over the Baltimore Orioles.
"It was an amazing experience," Cunningham said during an interview at the game. "To come back to the sports teams that I grew up supporting and loving, it's amazing."
Earlier this winter, Cunningham had his jersey retired at James Bowie High School in Arlington, where he starred for two years before transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida.
Since entering the NBA, Cunningham has established himself as one of the game’s best young players and has led the Pistons on a resurgence that saw the franchise snap its 17-year playoff win drought.
This season, the Pistons hold the best record in the Eastern Conference at 40-13, and Cunningham was named to the NBA All-Star team for a second consecutive season, averaging 25.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 9.6 assists per game.
As for the Rangers, they will hope Cunningham’s involvement will bring them some good fortune as they seek to make the postseason for the first time since winning it all in 2023.
Last season, Texas finished with a record of 81-81, a slight improvement after finishing 78-84 in their 2024 title defense season.
With some fresh faces entering the lineup, an offensive resurgence will be key to a bounce-back season after the Rangers have struggled at the plate for the last two seasons.
Once again, it figures that the starting pitching will be the strength of the club this season as Texas added all-star lefty MacKenzie Gore from the Washington Nationals to slide in behind Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi at the top of the rotation.
Texas will open the 2026 season on March 26, taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love. The Rangers' home opener is set for April 3rd against the Cincinnati Reds.
