The Texas Rangers remain in the middle of the postseason picture, even if they have not fully separated themselves as a clear contender.
At 38-42 and sitting 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West Division, Texas continues operating in a space where buying at the MLB trade deadline remains realistic.
The Rangers are not comfortably positioned, but they remain close enough that a well-timed move before the August 3 MLB trade deadline could significantly improve their outlook.
One proposal gaining attention connects Texas to a major middle-of-the-order bat.
Zachary D. Rymer from Bleacher Report identified the Rangers as the best trade destination for Boston Red Sox slugger Willson Contreras.
The reasoning centers around one of Texas’ clearest offensive weaknesses.
According to Rymer, the Rangers have improved in getting on base compared to 2025, but production from first base remains a concern.
That creates a natural argument for targeting a hitter like Contreras.
Across his career, Contreras owns a .353 On-base Percentage (OBP) and has elevated that figure to .375 this season.
Adding that type of profile could immediately change the structure of the lineup.
Texas already has players capable of supplying power.
The issue has been creating enough opportunities and sustaining offensive pressure.
Jake Burger remains a productive hitter, but his results have generally been stronger against left-handed pitching than right-handed pitching.
That could open the door to using him more strategically.
If Contreras arrived, Texas could install him as the everyday first baseman while creating flexibility to rotate Burger and Joc Pederson into designated hitter opportunities.
That alignment would potentially strengthen multiple spots in the order.
The challenge, of course, would be cost.
Contreras carries significant value and would not come cheaply in a trade.
The Rangers would also need to become comfortable adjusting roles for current contributors.
Still, for a team searching for more consistent offensive production and stronger on-base ability, the fit is understandable.
Contreras is hitting .280 with 16 home runs and 46 RBIs in 76 games this season.
Beyond the numbers, Contreras brings qualities that make him appealing beyond production.
One of his strongest traits is competitiveness.
He plays with visible energy and intensity throughout games.
Another defining quality is confidence.
Contreras rarely appears passive and embraces pressure situations.
He also brings leadership and emotional presence that can influence a clubhouse.
That combination of production, energy, and personality helps explain why teams continue viewing him as a player capable of changing the direction of an offense.
