Hovering near postseason contention, the Texas Rangers may leverage Jake Burger’s elite power to improve their roster.

The Texas Rangers remain in an unusual position as the trade deadline approaches.

At 38-40, they sit below .500, but they remain 1.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West and one game out of the American League Wild Card race.

That positioning creates an interesting challenge.

Under normal circumstances, a team with that record might lean toward selling.

Instead, Texas still has realistic reasons to pursue upgrades and attempt to strengthen the roster for a playoff push.

One idea that has surfaced, however, goes against traditional deadline logic.

According to Jim Bowden from The Athletic, the Rangers could consider trading first baseman Jake Burger despite continuing to operate with a buyer mentality.

The reasoning is not centered on moving salary or beginning a rebuild.

Rather, the concept focuses on using Burger as an asset to improve weaknesses elsewhere on the MLB roster.

Bowden suggested that while Texas wants offensive improvement, Burger’s profile could attract contenders searching for right-handed power.

That interest could allow the Rangers to exchange one strength for help in another area.

It is a concept that initially feels contradictory.

Burger has established himself as a productive power hitter with 101 career home runs and remains under team control through the 2028 season.

That level of control adds value and increases what Texas could potentially demand in return.

At the same time, the Rangers’ offensive profile explains why the conversation exists.

Texas currently ranks 19th with a .242 batting average and 22nd with a .706 OPS.

The Rangers also rank 21st in home runs with 79, 17th in On-base Percentage (OBP) at .318, and 22nd in Slugging Percentage (SLG) at .387.

Those numbers show an offense that still needs more consistent production.

That creates the central question.

Why move a player known for power if the offense already needs help?

The answer may come down to offensive balance.

Burger has a .313 On-base Percentage (OBP) and the Rangers could potentially target a player who reaches base more consistently while still contributing offensively.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were floated as one possible fit, though any deal would depend heavily on matching roster needs.

At this stage, a trade remains unlikely.

Still, the possibility cannot be completely dismissed if the right return becomes available.

Beyond the numbers, Burger’s appeal comes from qualities teams value.

One of his strongest traits is aggressiveness.

He attacks opportunities and plays with confidence.

Another defining quality is resilience.

Burger has worked through challenges throughout his career and continued developing.

He also brings energy and a willingness to embrace pressure moments.

Those characteristics help explain why interest would likely exist if Texas ever seriously explored moving him.
