It was a long-awaited breakthrough at the plate for Wyatt Langford, but the moment proved fleeting in a frustrating night for the Texas Rangers.

Entering Friday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a prolonged early-season slump, Langford had struggled to find consistency, carrying a low batting average and piling up strikeouts through his first dozen games.

In the fifth inning, however, he delivered a much-needed spark, turning on a breaking pitch and sending it over the left-field wall for his first home run of the 2026 season.

The ball just cleared the fence and the reach of Teoscar Hernandez, giving Langford a confidence-boosting swing that hinted at a turnaround. But as he made his way around the bases, it became clear something wasn’t right.

Langford appeared to be dealing with discomfort in his right leg, and the issue lingered as the game progressed.

Though he briefly remained in the game and even returned to his defensive position, the Rangers opted for caution soon after. Langford was removed in the following inning, with the club turning to a replacement in left field to avoid further risk.

Initial treatment included wrapping the affected area, and the decision to pull him came despite the young slugger’s desire to continue playing.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker noted that he prioritized long-term health over short-term gain, particularly given Langford’s history. Over his first two big-league seasons, he has dealt with multiple injuries, including several stints on the injured list tied to oblique issues.

While he has still managed to be productive — appearing in a significant number of games and emerging as a key offensive contributor, durability remains an important factor in his development.

The severity of this latest issue is not yet known, with further evaluation scheduled to determine the extent of the injury. There is some optimism that it may not require an extended absence, but the team will wait for imaging results before making any decisions regarding his availability.

Despite the abrupt end to his night, Langford’s home run offered a reminder of his upside. He remains a central figure in the Rangers’ lineup and a player capable of impacting games in multiple ways when healthy.

For Texas, the hope is that the injury proves minor and that Langford can build on the positive momentum from his first homer rather than face another interruption early in the season.
