Jack Leiter Poised to Take Next Step as Rangers Eye Bigger Year Two Leap in 2026 cover image

Leiter's rookie season showcased potential. He's now honing command, aiming to solidify the Rangers' rotation and unlock ace-level performance in 2026.

Each new season presents an opportunity for young pitchers to take the next step, and for the Texas Rangers, right-hander Jack Leiter enters 2026 positioned to do exactly that. After a promising rookie campaign, Leiter appears poised to build on a strong foundation and emerge as an even more reliable force in the Rangers’ rotation.

Leiter, the Rangers’ first-round selection in 2021, delivered a productive first full season in the Major Leagues in 2025. He logged 151.2 innings and finished with a 3.86 ERA, a solid showing for a rookie pitching on a club with championship aspirations. More importantly, Leiter held his own within what became one of the most effective starting rotations in franchise history, demonstrating the durability and competitiveness needed to succeed at the highest level.

While his debut season was encouraging, it also highlighted areas for growth. Leiter’s stuff was rarely in question; his fastball and breaking pitches consistently missed bats, but command and efficiency occasionally limited his ability to work deeper into games. Walks, in particular, remained the primary obstacle separating him from the next tier of starters. Those are common challenges for young power arms, and they often define the difference between early success and long-term excellence.

The coaching transition in Texas could play a key role in Leiter’s development. With veteran pitching coach Mike Maddux departing for the Angels, the Rangers promoted Jordan Tiegs from assistant pitching coach. That continuity may prove beneficial for Leiter, who has worked closely with Tiegs throughout much of his professional career. Familiarity and trust between pitcher and coach can be critical, especially for a young arm refining command at the Major League level.

Leiter’s pedigree has never been in doubt. A former Vanderbilt standout, he entered pro ball with expectations of becoming a frontline starter. His rookie season suggested that trajectory remains intact. As he gains experience, small adjustments improved pitch sequencing, better fastball location, and more consistent mechanics could unlock another level of performance.

For the Rangers, a step forward from Leiter in 2026 would further solidify a rotation already viewed as a strength. With continued refinement and a stable developmental environment, Leiter has a clear path to turning promise into dominance.

If his command trends in the right direction, year two could be when Leiter moves closer to fulfilling the ace-level potential that made him such a prized draft pick.
